a grateful mother

this is my youngest son jory, one of our master soapmakers, showing off a partial day's work. not bad huh? this is about 150 lbs. of soap. an average day for soap making. these loaves will be cut into small one ounce sampler sized soaps. that's a lot of cuts! i could never do this without jory. so here's to you kid! you are absolutely the bomb!!!

now this is our other son cael. he helps out sometimes on the weekends and we're always glad to have an extra set of hands. big hands too. he cuts labels, washes soap rocks, makes soap sample boxes . . . or whatever we need. it's great to have your kids nearby and to be on good terms. i realize that not every mom has that good fortune. i've gotta be one of the luckiest mom's in the world.

happy mother's day to all.

are you gellon?

sorry to alarm you, but this is one of THE most disturbing things i've read in a long time. it gnaws at the very core of our existence, and if true, the implications are so far reaching, i shudder to think what horrors lie ahead of us. could genetically modified foods, also known as frankenfoods, be causing the debilitating condition known as morgellons disease that causes the constant sensation of insects crawling under your skin and strange multi-colored inorganic fibers to emerge from painful skin lesions? it wouldn't surprise me in the least. thank you monsanto! read all about it here . . but i'm warning you . . . this is scary scary stuff.

melter smelter

yesterday was quite an adventure using our brand new commercial wax melter for the first time. (ok, so we don't get out much) after we got the darned thing filled with over nine gallons of water (thought it would never stop guzzling water) one of the fittings leaked because we hadn't sealed it properly to begin with. go figure. so we had to dump all the water back out by hand (since of course we couldn't get the drain plug unscrewed) and fix the leak with plumbing goop and start over. then it took forever to get the wax melted (several hours).

next challenge was to get the beeswax based bug balm to flow through the unheated ball valve spigot, but once it finally did it was fine. it even formed a little bug balm stalagtite by the end of the pour which we thought was kinda cool. (again, we don't get out much) regulating the flow was a little tricky though since this is a much bigger spout than our old little melter with more force behind it. but i'm sure practice will make perfect. (i was afraid we were going to have to resort to the $1000 heated hose attachment right off the bat . . .but luckily we can lust for that later!)

i think we're gonna love this new piece of equipment! we can make 10 gallons of balm at once and that's a LOT of little 1.3 oz. tins. i especially like the even heat that the water jacket provides. i had to stand on a step stool to see inside and i felt like charlie in the chocolate factory stirring this big stainless steel vat of melting wax with temperature gauges and all. fun stuff. (did i mention we don't get out much?)

if you're interested, you can buy one here.
